Over 2,000 quilters participated in the 2012 Free-Motion Quilting Challenge where 15 FMQ Experts provided 16 tutorials and sponsors donated amazing prizes. While SewCalGal did not plan to host more challenges in 2013, enthusiastic participants wanted to continue to learn and have more FMQ Challenges, inspiring SewCalGal to host 4-6 FMQ Challenges in 2013 that will primarily be based on tutorials released during the 2012 FMQ Challenge.
SewCalGal encourages quilters to take classes, read books, watch DVDs, follow blogs that share insights on FMQ and practice! And, for those that did not complete all of the tutorials released in the 2012 FMQ Challenge, or didn't have time to master a tutorial, I encourage you to take time to practice.
Like the 2012 FMQ Challenge, the 2013 FMQ Challenges will be focused more on learning and less about winning prizes. Still, we'll have sponsors and prizes will be randomly awarded to those that finish three or more of the challenges released in 2013. You'll also have more time to complete these challenges as they will all be released prior to June lst and you'll have until October 31st to complete them. Prizes will be announced sometime this summer and awarded in early November. But, it will be your responsibility to follow along these challenges, by getting updates from my blog, to learn how to enter to win prizes. To clarify, your entry in the individual challenges is only one part. The next step will be a special entry, where you show evidence of which tutorials in 2013 that you completed. A post with linky will be released in October where you'll need to enter to win prizes.
Why are prizes not listed now?
As SewCalGal, I have been focused on wrapping up the 2012 FMQ Challenge and hosting other activities that had been planned, thus not a lot of time was left for coordinating the 2013 FMQ Challenges. Plus, I'm not honestly sure how many participants there will be, so I hate to ask sponsors to donate till I have a better idea. Thus, if you are planning on participating in any of the 2013 FMQ Challenges, please take a moment to sign up for the NEW email list for this 2013 challenge at: http://eepurl.com/xurZb A limited number of emails will be shared and they primarily will be used to notify you when new challenges are released, as well as periodic updates on this challenge.

2013 FMQ Challenge #4 - FMQ Postcard Swap, hosted by Janet McElroy (to be announced before June lst). This challenge will be based on Janet's Postcard Swap. Those that are participating in this swap can easily enter and those that have not participated may want to join the Swap, or at least get familiar with Janet's tutorials for FMQ Postcards. While more details on this challenge will be released soon, participants will basically need to create FMQ Postcards. It will be optional if you want to swap or keep them, but SewCalGal highly encourages participants to swap. What a great way to get a special collection of beautiful FMQ postcards, with all the special memories and friendships that can go with it!
2013 FMQ Challenge #5 - Sponsored by Patsy Thompson Designs
2013 FMQ Challenge #6 - 2012 FMQ Challenge 2nd Chance. This is a great opportunity for those that didn't complete 12, or more, challenges in 2012 in time to be able to enter to win a Grand Prize. AND, an opportunity for those that did complete and enter, but have continued to practice FMQ and can show they have improved. While more info will be revealed soon, keep working on the tutorials released in 2012 and keep practicing!
For those using Facebook, our optional group that was setup for this challenge will remain open and is a good way for those interested in FMQ to share insights on this topic. The group is called "2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge"
Links to additional information participants are encouraged to read:
- Suggested Supplies for free-motion quilting. FMQ Experts may also share insights on their personal preferences when their tutorial is released. You are also encouraged to refer to supplies that you find in your books and DVDs on FMQ, and to try a variety of supplies to form your own opinion on "your" favorites.

This is super exciting. I am going to share this right now! Oh and btw I shared your Christmas Quilt Show on my blog the other day. Just thought you would want to know!
Great! sounds like it should be fun. Thanks for doing this!
Linked to blog yesterday through Pinterest because of an Accuquilt search. Poked around, found this post, added the blog to my blog list, and will definitely be watching for updates.
AJ (The Quilting Pot)
Sounds like fun! I can't wait. I've been following along on your own challenge and have learned a lot. There's still lots of room for improvement in my FMQ skills though! Thanks for helping us too :)
I am now subscribed to your blog. I hope to be able to try this because I really want to improve my skills.
Oooh, this will be fun, look forward to more insights soon :)
I took Susan's class and loved it. I'd love to have the DVD too.
You have the cream of the top FMQuilters. Wow. I'd LOVE to participate in this!!!

SCG, Where do I sign up? Kd ~ www.KdQuilts.com
I haven't done a lot of FMQ yet, and am rather slow because I'm a perfectionist. But I would love to improve my skills and have the benefit of all those talented people's tutorials! I will be trying to keep up, but I'm in!
Brilliant! How did I miss this first time around? Oh well -- I'll be participating, definitely -- thanks!!
Those are some really great teachers. And I know they have some great techniques and designs. Can a longarm quilter join the fun? We still free-hand quilt, just moving the "pen" not the "paper".
I can't wait! I recognize many of the teacher's names and admire their work. This is going to be a great year. Thank you so much for hosting this incredible challenge!
wow...thanks for this opportunity to learn fmq!
I've been taking classes and reading everything I could get about quilting. I'm so excited for this.
Learning FMQ is on my list of goals for 2012. I've got 2 quilt tops set aside that are not going to the long arm because I'm going to FMQ them. I promise. I'll be joining you on this journey. So far, I'm a straight line outline or in the ditch kind of girl on quilts that are small only. I really want to change that.
This is a personal challenge I need to do! I would have selected "0" in the rating of FMQ skill, but the options went only down to one. lol
I can't wait! I'm a stitch in the ditch quilter, this is so nice of you to do this, THANK YOU!!!!!
Yeah!!! Thank you....Thank you... Thank you!!!!
Well; I am a hand quilter who really wants to do this. I have played with it very little....and want to learn...I tend to be very busy, but I am really going to try to do this for the whole year. What do I do to get signed up????
I have never attempted real FMQ and am really looking forward to this - like Cecella said, I'm a stitch in the ditch quilter and would love to learn new tricks! Thank you.
I think i need to master this skill...and i need to be challenged...getting read to quilt in 2012
Wonderful group of experts - it should be a lot of fun!! I'm taking the pledge.
I'm very excited about this as I've taken a couple of classes and bought a dvd but I'm still very uncomfortable with fmq and can't seem to have pretty even stitches.
I'm in for a challenge, I so want to improve my skills so bad!!!
What a great idea. I am in for the challenge and look forward to it.
I'm in! I've been needing to work on FMQ, so this is just perfect! Thanks!
So glad to hear about this. For the past 8 weeks I've been working on FMQing - a monthly group is just what I need to keep going.
looking forward to the FMQ challenge.... thank you for hosting
oh this is going to be so much fun. thanks tons for hosting the 2012 FMQ challenge.
I'ld love to take the chance to jump into this challenge FUN. Only in January I'm traveling and won't be able to attend. hugs Brigitte

I just filled out the survey. I am in!

I'm in. I just learned to FMQ this last year. I to not have the funds to take the classes so this is really great you will be hosting this!!

I am so excited! Thank you for putting all of this together!
Super duper excited for this! I think I am ready to learn how to become a better FM quilter. I am excited to learn with all of you as well! Let's have some fun!
I find free motion quilting to be fun, fun, fun, but I still want to learn, as I only have self taught myself and I want to really fill myself up with FMQ. Thank you for this opportunity
My two areas needing much needed tutorial help are paper piecing AND FMQ!! This will be perfect for meeting my New Year's personal quilting challenges. Thank you for setting this up. These campaigns are quite taxing and take a lot of organization on your part. The Wantobe Quilter's Campaign was a 3 month challenge that really kept me on my toes. I loved it! Now I'm going to add your challenge to my blog. Like Hillbilly Tonya, I'm just a little bit nervous!!
Merry Christmas Blessings
Gmama Jane
This looks like so much fun! I can't wait to join in :)
Just learned about you and this FMQ challenge while blog hopping. I'm signing up!

Count me in! Sounds fun :)
I'm curious! I'm afraid to commit because I have failed in past quilt-alongs. LOL. But, I signed up and hope that I will be successful. :-)
ooooh fun fun fun! Count me in :)
Would like to sign up, but don't seen to see what that can be done? Sounds like a great idea tho - if we get reminded when something is posted.

I am looking forward to this,I would really like to learn more,as I can`t afford to send all of my quilts to a LA.
Looking forward to this - first time I've signed up for anything, so it's with a bit of trepidation!
Ok, I think that this is just what I need to get this freemotion down. Just purchased the stitch regulator for my machine so there is now NO excuse. Count me in.

I've signed up on December 3, but didn't leave a comment back then. I´m i in the challenge? Looking forward to do it.
Hi, I signed up and posted it on my blog back on Nov. 26, and now I don't see my comment on here. Did my sign-up also not go through? It was doing weird things that night and after I submitted, it just gave me a blank screen, so I'm not sure. I am going to participate!

FMQ skill improvement is definitely on my 2012 goal list. I'm signing up and I'll be putting a link on my blog to here so others out there know about it.
Whoo whoo...now maybe I can finally learn FMQ!
This is something I've had on my to-do list for a long time. I really want to improve my limited FMQ skills and this seems like the perfect opportunity. I am very much looking forward to this!

Wow! I'm so pleased that you're hosting this challenge. I really want to improve my FMQ skills, so this will be good encouragement. Thank you!
I'm getting more and more excited about this challenge. Today I'm printing out all the info. Making a folder, getting my supplies ready and making sure I have everything ready to go. Fun Fun fun.
To clarify, are we piecing these blocks together as we go, or should we have a sampler quilt made to quilt each month's design onto?
This sounds just like somthing for me - thanks for the info, I'd like "IN" please...look forward to more info.!
I can't wait!!! FMQ is something that I have wanted to learn for several years, just afraid to tackle it! I'm in--it will be so much fun.
This is something I need badly to overcome my fear and improve. Thanks
This is just what I need - I am signed up and subscribed..........jumping in WITHOUT a net.....LOL!

This should be fun! Thanks for putting it together!
I'm up for the challenge. I've been in a quilting funk lately and look forward to monthly challenges to get my juices flowing again! I know I can learn something new and am looking forward to this exciting adventure with you all.
This sounds like just the thing I need to encourage me to keep practicing my FMQ skills (or lack there of). Thank you for organizing this.
Okay, I'm in. I have never joined any kind of quilt-along or anything like that, so this will be interesting to see if I can keep up. But I really want to improve my FMQ and I have already taken the classes offered locally. Thanks for offering this opportunity.
I am really excited about this! I will finally be posting about it on my blog this weekend and need to get cracking on my quilt sandwiches!
I'm in, can't wait.
I am so on board! Can't wait to see what I accomplish. Great idea.
This fits nicely with my t0-do list for 2012
Cant wait!
This is exactly what I am wanting to do in 2012. I can machine quilt but trying to figure out WHAT to do for the quilting is the issue I have with every quilt I do. Thank you so much for such a wonderful New Years present.
Thanks so much for putting this challenge together. I'm looking forward to each month's challenge.
I'm already signed up, but excited to get started!
I am willing to try too. I also am a stitch in the ditch type of machine quilter. I am game.
XOXOXO Subee
I thought I had signed up, but I guess I haven't. I have been stitching in the ditch and stippling for years, and I am so ready to move on! :)
I retook the challenge and now I'm trying to publish a comment. I hope I'm signed in!
Wow this sounds great I will take the challenge. I just hope to not embarrass myslef but I will jump in with both feet here.
I'm so excited/nervous to get started with this challenge. This is just the motivation I need to get down to it! I already took the pledge and posted button to my blog, but I had not left a comment until know. I look forward to sharing with each of you!
So far I only stitch in the ditch. I have purchased several books on FMQ and have seen a few demos. I'm still so terrified to try it. I've decided this is the year! Thank you for the challenge!
Sounds like fun, I am up for the challenge also!
This is going to be great! Thanks for the push.
Thanks for the challenge!
I'd love to join in
I'd love to join the fun!
Whooohooo! Time to honor my commitment! Would you believe I started TODAY??!! I did my first ever thread painting - it's really EASY to make fabric scraps look like REAL evergreen trees! Good results are certainly encouraging!!
I am a ROOKIE but want to learn so much more. Thanks for doing this.
OK, Here we go ! Off to watch the Frances tutorial... and practice, practice, practice!
Thanks for arranging all this for us. You are so helpful, SCG.
I've subscribed to. When will it start?
I've just signed up, because I wanna learn from you girls :o)
You have an amazing blog. Here's to your best year ever, 2012!
Count me in!! What a great challenge!!
I've recently taken a machine quilting course online and I can do basic fmq but Need to practice. This will make me accountable and improve my skills. This is a great challenge and I look forward to being able to finish my own quilts.
WOW...on the day I turn 50 I come across your site...what a wonderful thing to have a free motion quilting challenge!!!! I'd be very happy to jump in and follow... because I'm practically only a stitch-in-the-ditcher ...and just "thinking" about FMQ is a frightful challenge.
Ciao!
Marta from Italy!
Looking forward to learning! Thanks!
(...2nd post; 1st one must have gotten lost in cyber-space!)
Glad Sue of http://suedaurio.blogspot.com/ sent me here. My machine quilting has been limited to using the walking foot and either quilting in the ditch, or quilting grids. Have tried free motion, but need practice and education on it. Thanks for the challenge. By the end of the year, I should be able to decently machine quilt. :) Thanks, Nita
Wow, this sounds so cool and how very nice of you to organize this for your followers.
I'm excited to learn through this challenge. I need to commit the time and this should nudge me along. Thanks for organizing it!
I'm in and just registered. Also put the badge button on my blog. So excited to combine these tutes with Leah Days weekly lessons. 2012 is definitely the year of FMQ'ing! :)
Thanks for organizing this challenge.
I am looking forward to this. I want to use up my stash by making quilts for neices and nephews for Christmas and some charity quilts and this will be a good place to help finish them up and practice at the same time.
Wow thanks for the chance to participate in this challenge. I cannot wait to get started
Thanks for pulling this challenge together. I can't wait to see what we'll be working on first.
I've been making noises about trying this for years so I guess there's no excuse now.
Robyn
Köszönöm ,hogy részese lehetek e csodálatos oktatásnak.
Thanks for the chance!!
This challenge is just what I need! Since I feel comfortable with stippling I would like to try other designs but I am nervous.
Count me in!! I've always thought that there *had* to be a way to make those beautiful designs using our home machines. And I was right!!
I tried this and found it to be a challenge to me. I enjoy FMQ and look forward to learning .
I am eager to get started! Looking forward to the challenge.
How can I join the facebook group? It says closed. Thanks
Just click on the Join this Group button
Okay, been a rough start of the year (my mom died and I didn't want to have any quilty projects to associate with the time periods...) But I'm ready to go now. Today I pieced my "suggested FMQ quilt". Can't wait to show it to the group!
Thanks for this wonderful opportunity! Looking forward to a great year of FMQ
I signed up, but I can't figure out if there is a January tutorial/challenge already posted.
I found it Krista...just click on the word January and it will take you to the January challenge! Such fun! Good luck with the challenge!
Love this,..Thank-you!
Ready to improve my FMQing skills!
I'd love to learn how to fmq better!
Köszönöm hogy én is részt vehetek!
I have the button on my blog, but I don't see my comment here so I'm going to try again. I am ready to do the first month's practice and I know I will be the big winner at the end. Maybe not all the prizes will be mine, but I'm sure I will be a big winner by learning some quilting skills during the year.
Not sure if this is where I link to my FMQ, but here it is! http://catsongstitchery.blogspot.com/2012/01/2012-free-motion-quilting-challenge.html
Looking forward to Feb!

This is great! Looking forward to the challenge!
I have become a member on the facebook group and will try out the FMQ :-)
Its great fun and looking forward to learn and increase my skills.
Thanks for this challenge.
I thought I signed up already and was looking forward to tuned-up skills and a bit more confidence. I don't see my comments here, and don't remember (It's no fun getting old!) if I used a different name. Go figure. I don't participate in facebook and I don't have a webpage or blog. Just your basics here. I can't figure out how to upload my FMQ samples for January.

WOW! This sounds awesome - I'm going to send my email straight away - this is just what I need to get me going too!
I have finished my first block and uploaded a picture to my picture blog. I've added my blog link and pledged and sign up for emails. Is there anything else I need to do to quality for prizes?
Boy do I need to improve! I enjoyed working on this, but kept 'forgetting' how to make a leaf! LOL
Please remove my name from the post as I will not be able to participate.
Thank you,
Saundra
rcole36@verizon.net
This sounds great, count me in. I just need to search around and find the first video.
Looking forward to the "Journey". Is there a place to share photos, or should we use facebook? How do you know what we did? Also is there a list of participants?
I'm taking the pledge to do the 2012 Quilt Challenge. Now I just need to go to the blog that tells me how to start a flicker account so I can post my 1st lesson!
cathyquiltsalot@yahoo.com
To officially enter my samples, I think I am supposed to post them on flikr but do not know exactly how to do that. I thought I you provided a link once before but I can't seem to find it.
Please help. Thank you.
The January Block is on my blog, after some trial blocks that can be used somewhere else.Do I put it on Facebook also? Waiting for February.Cheers from Jean
It is the end of the month and I am ready to post the picture of my FMQ for January, but I can't find the link. I notice others are asking about this too. Can anyone out there tell us where we are supposed to post our pictures?
For those having problems trying to find where to post a link to their entry to the "monthly" challenge, on this page you'll see the table for the "monthly tutorials". This table will be updated as tutorials are released. But, info on how to enter any given monthly challenge is on the same page that the respective monthly tutorial is. E.G. For January's challenge, click on "January" in the table and you'll be taken to the appropriate page.
Hi,
I'm just getting started and don't have a clue where to start! :-( Can you give me a plan of action, preferably step-by-step if possible. I'm feeling VERY anxious starting now, as it's almost the end of January (like 2 days left!).
What is the best website to go to each day to start? I'm very scatter-brained and need to follow a set routine for this all to sink in and be a benefit for me.
Will the info (including videos) that Frances Moore has taught during Jan. still be available after we leave Jan. and begin Feb. in a few days with Diane Gaudynski? Or should I just forget about January and work through the Challenge with just 11 months?
Also, yesterday I saw a webpage for the Challenge that was about submitting photos and opening a Flicker account but don't know how to get from point A to point B, and I can't find that page! Any tips on how to do this? Again, this is the set routine that I need for me to be successful.
Sorry to be so wordy and ask so many questions! Unfortunately, I'm at that very anxious point where I know myself well enough to predict that the next step for me is paralysis and giving up! I see so much value in this Challenge and want to take advantage of all of the hard work you've done. Thanks so much in advance for any and all help you can give me!
I really enjoyed the January challenge. Thank you for organizing this. I'm so impressed by the line up of experts you've included and by their generosity in sharing their skills. Please note that the link to Cindy Needham's site takes the viewer to Diane Gaudynski's site. This occurs in the intro paragraph above the table and within the table. I believe the link to Cindy Needham should be http://blog.cindyneedham.com/ Thanks again.
Wow. That was speedy. The link to Cindy works now. Thank you.

Hi
I am looking forward to this challenge, what a great idea.
I have a question about the feet. I have a Janome and when I looked the free motion quilting foot, it showed a set with the open toe darning foot, the closed toe and the clear. When I look on Amazon or Ebay for it is very expensive, like $50 and up. My husband insists I need the whole set and it has to be specific Janome brand, I say that I could use a generic one for a low shank, and just the closed toe should do everything I need. ($15 on ebay) What do you recommend? I have never free motion quilted before. (I have only quilted one wallhanging and that was in the ditch) Thanks, missysaprons@yahoo.com
